Hosea Cleveland is a small business owner from Seneca, South Carolina. He ran for the district seat in 2014 and though unsuccessful in the primary, he gained momentum and support from peers and constituents during his candidacy. Cleveland capitalized on this support as a 2016 Democratic Candidate for US House, earning 75,000 votes at a paltry $0.20 per vote.
Cleveland is a resident of Oconee County. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1975, the summer after graduating from Westminster High School. After being honorably discharged and returning to the area in the 1980's, Cleveland worked in several skilled and professional occupations including farming, industrial management and education.
Cleveland is a 1983 alumnus of South Carolina State University, where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology. In 1984, he was recruited and hired as a civil engineer for the S.C. Department of Transportation. He worked in District 7 from the Clarendon County Office.
He has owned an independent property and casualty insurance agency since 1998, building his clientele based on the tenet of serving his clients’ insurance needs.
Prior to his agency, Cleveland worked for a national life and health insurer as an agent and was later promoted to sales manager. This was his start in the insurance and finance business, when he began managing insurance risk in 1992.
As a lifetime resident of Oconee County, Cleveland believes in helping his community and is active in local and statewide community service organizations. He is also a lifelong member of St. Matthew Baptist Church in Westminster, SC.
Cleveland is a widower, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He is a staunch proponent of family values.
